AB OBJECTIVE: To determine HIV infection among women attending two Haitian
slum-based AN clinics and to determine risk factors for HIV. METHODS:
Women consecutively presenting at two AN clinics were evaluated with
questionnaires, pelvic exams, and laboratory diagnoses including:
vaginal wet mount microscopy; Neisseria gonorrhoea culture and EIA
chlamydia antigen detection for cervical specimens; RPR screening of all
sera; MHA-TP for RPR-reactive sera; and anonymous, linked HIV antibody
serodiagnosis with two EIA. RESULTS: Of 664 women evaluated, 56 (8.4%)
were HIV(+). They did not differ significantly from HIV(-) in mean age
(26 years), being single (25%), reported mean age of coital debut (18
years), reported history of STD (14%), literacy rate (33%), nor for
other indicators of socioeconomic status (SES). TABULAR DATA, SEE
ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS: Although HIV infection was more common
among syphilis seroreactive women, it was not, unlike syphilis,
associated with indicators of lowest SES. Adequate community-based
STD/HIV prevention programs need to be enhanced to slow the spread of
HIV.
